Updated: Jul 15

Decorating a mantel or dresser top can seem really simple until you try. You have a pile of adorable things but no matter what you do, nothing seems to fit just right together. It actually comes down to a simple set of rules and a bit of trial and error.

1. Contrast

Having contrast in shape, size and color is very important. If everything is the same height, exactly the same color or all the same shape it just won't look right. Even if you want to use the same object, such as picture frames, make sure you have different sizes and textures incorporated.

This is a great example of contrast that is created through size and shape of the objects!

2. White Space

If you have too much on the mantel, it will seem congested and overwhelming. You can put a good amount onto a mantel but make sure objects have air and breathing room.

3. Asymmetry

Although symmetry can be very appealing, it can have a cold and reserved feel. Creating an asymmetrical arrangement will give a relaxed, cozy and spontaneous feel.

4. Overlapping

Overlapping can help create a sense of depth. This is one of the number one things missing in your home If something does not feel right. You can add depth to your mantel or dresser top by overlapping frames or putting smaller or skinnier objects, like candle sticks, in front of the larger objects.

5. Add a Mirror

Using a mirror as the focal point on your mantel can not only make your mantel look great but also can improve the overall feel of the room. It is a simple way to make a bold statement! You can shop a similar one like below by clicking here! It has a classic look that you can tie into any style!

This mirror helps make the room feel bigger and creates helps balance out the bold pattern on the fireplace.

6. Go Crazy Plant Lady

Adding a plant can check off a few of these items on your list.

It also adds life and color. You can even add faux greenery like this one. You might have to spend a little more upfront but it will never die!

Leaving the mantel simple and adding some greenery will go a long way!
